I’m a recovering corporate lawyer turned entrepreneur, investor and advocate for seed-stage businesses.
Over the past few years I’ve served as Co-Chairman of the SBS Venture Fund and Chairman of The Coalition for a Digital Economy (Coadec), and along with Carlos Silva I founded and run Seedrs, a forthcoming platform that will transform the way startups get their very first financing. Through all these roles I’ve come to believe that seed-stage businesses — the earliest of the early, usually made up of little more than a new idea, a small team and lots of ambition — are special and fantastic creatures: they’re vastly different from later-stage startups but are often wrongly grouped together or ignored entirely, and while they represent the riskiest type of business they also harbour the greatest potential for innovation, value creation and financial returns.
Seeds of Thought is a blog of my thoughts and musings on these nascent enterprises, including what they offer, what they need and what can done to harness their immense potential and turn them into commercially-viable and ultimately profitable ventures. I hope the posts here will inspire comment and discussion, and if your experience or intuition tells you that I’ve got the wrong end of the stick, please say so.
